| Tentative Itinerary |
|
Day 1 - Arrive in Morelia, UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of the state of Michoacán. After settling into our hotel, Casa Suites Morelia, we meet for drinks at a sidewalk café overlooking the lovely Plaza de Armas (main square) followed by a delicious dinner at one of Morelia's fine restaurants.

Day 2- All day guided tour of historical and cultural sites in Morelia’s beautiful historic downtown. After a delicious mid-day meal and short siesta, the tour continues until early evening. Then we stop for drinks while viewing the fireworks and illumination of Morelia’s magnificent cathedral. We move on to the wonderful peña, (folk music club) El Colibri for trova music and a performance of Michoacan’s traditional Dance of the Viejitos.

Day 3- Morning in Tzintzuntzan, where we visit the yacatas, the ruins of the ancient Tarascan civilization, and the present village’s lovely church and atrium featuring 500 year old olive trees; we move on to picturesque Patzcuaro, where we taste the atole and corundas (Michoacan-style tamales) at the Basilica to kick off our stay. We spend all day and the next two nights in one of Mexico’s most charming and historic towns, staying at the magical little hotel, Meson de San Antonio.

Day 4 - In the morning we travel through the beautiful countryside to visit workshops in the world-renown copper producing village of Santa Clara del Cobre; we visit weavers in Cuanajo and tour the historic church in nearby Tupataro. We return to Patzcuaro to eat, shop, and relax.

Day 5 & 6 - A two day excursion to various indigenous villages of the remote Meseta Purepecha where we will we join in a community’s saint’s day festivities-- dancing through the village streets while we appreciate the traditional celebration of Mexico’s Purepecha culture. We’ll spend the night in the region so we can spend another day visiting artisans who create various styles of clay art. We will return to Morelia in the afternoon, in time for a fantastic meal at one of the city’s fine restaurants. After a brief rest, we’ll visit a museum or take in an evening music performance.

| Day 7 - We take a morning stroll through Morelia’s largest market, where one can see everything for sale, from flowers and fish, to medicinal herbs and cow heads. It’s all there! We will grab some tacos and rest our feet, and then tour one of Morelia’s best attractions, the Casa de las Artesanias (folk art center). For the evening meal we will taste more of Michoacan’s regional dishes at a popular local dinner spot. |

Day 8 - We spend all morning in the village of Capula where we see artisans making Catrinas (skeletons) and gorgeous decorated plates out of clay; we leave Capula and head for Lake Patzcuaro, where we’ll enjoy a delicious fish dinner and sample the regional mezcal in a tranquil setting overlooking the lake; we then make a brief stop at the historic village of Santa Fe de la Laguna. We return to Morelia for some last minute shopping at the Mercado de Dulces (candy and souvenir market). Finally, after we’ve packed up all of our wonderful purchases to ready for our departure the following day, we conclude the tour with a special farewell dinner at one of Morelia’s most elegant restaurants.
